Synapse

As smartphones are widely adopted, mobile applications (apps) emerging to provide critical services such as food delivery and telemedicine. While bring convenience everyday life, this trend may create barriers for older adults who tend be less tech-savvy than young people. In-person or screen sharing support is helpful but limited by the help-givers' availability. Video tutorials can useful require users switch contexts between watching tutorial performing corresponding actions in app, which cumbersome do on a phone. Although interactive have been shown promising, none was designed adults. Furthermore, trial-and-error approach has beneficial adults, they often lack use approach. Inspired both approach, we an app-independent service, Synapse, help-givers multimodal smartphone help-receivers (e.g., adults) receive guidance with when work same task. We conducted user study 18 were 60 over. Our quantitative qualitative results show that Synapse provided better traditional video enabled participants feel more confident motivated.
